How to Set Goals

It takes on average 66 days to form a new habit. Lasting change comes from small, repeatable actions — walk the habit loop and build your SMART goal.
How to Set Goals
The big idea
Motivation fluctuates. Systems don't. Build the system.
🎯

The habit loop

Motivation is unreliable because it fluctuates with mood and circumstance. Habit science offers a more stable pathway — focusing on the routines, cues and rewards that make behaviour automatic.

The habit loop — Cue → Craving → Response → Reward — is a framework for change. A cue initiates the behaviour, the craving adds emotional significance, the response is the action taken, and the reward reinforces the behaviour. The skill is learning to tell good loops from bad ones.

Walk the loop

Same cue, same craving — two very different outcomes. Tap each stage.

Both loops start identically — the response is the only thing you change.

🔧 Make habits stick
✓ If/Then planning: "If I finish work, then I take five slow breaths."
✓ Use your environment: place triggers like water or shoes where you'll see them.
✓ Track progress: a simple checkbox or app keeps you consistent.
🌱 Keep them small
✓ Make them tiny: easy enough to do even on your busiest days.
✓ Anchor them: tie habits to stable cues in your daily routine.
✓ Make them rewarding: produce an immediate benefit your brain recognises.

1

Don't rely on motivation. Build a cue → response → reward loop instead.

2

Change only the response — anchor it to a cue you already have.

3

Make one SMART goal. Specific, measurable, and small enough for your busiest day.

4

Track it, share it, and celebrate the small wins along the way.
